What actually matters here
The puffer trap is fill. 'Down jacket' in a listing title costs nothing; actual down costs real money. A flat-looking baffle in the QC photo means polyester wadding, which is fine at polyester prices and a rip-off at down prices. Uneven lofting — puffy chest, flat corners — is the giveaway that a batch was underfilled.
Hardware second: jacket zippers take more cycles than any other garment zipper, and budget runs put their cheapest part exactly there. One close-up of the zipper pull and slider tells you whether this piece survives a winter or fails at the worst moment.
QC checklist — what to ask for before it ships
- Loft check: garment flat, baffles evenly puffed, no dead corners
- Zipper pull and slider close-up — the part that fails first
- Interior seam taping at the shoulder (waterproof claims live or die here)
- Cuff and hem elastic recovery in a stretch-and-release pair of photos
